My interest in the Soviet Moon is naming rights. Because the Soviets first observed the features, all of them were named in a Russian-centric manner (Sea of Moscow, etc.). For about a five-year period (1958-1963), half of the moon had Western names, and the other half had Russian names. After 1963 an international consortium was established with regard to naming the moon’s features, although you would be hard pressed to find any African or American Indian names in the “international” naming organization.
